Mindfulness, Stress and Parkinsons Disease

This radio program focuses attention on mindfulness, stress and Parkinson’s disease. One of the founding faculty members of Duke Integrative Medicine,Jeffrey Brantley, MD was trained in mindfulness as a resident in psychiatry at the University of California at Irvine Medical Center. Dr. Brantley was elected as a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association in 2013 and is currently a faculty member at Duke Medical Center.

As Dr. Brantley explains on his website http://www.calmingyourangrymind.com

“Mindfulness is not just for priests, monks or nuns, and it isn’t a religion.Mindfulness and meditation are for anyone who wishes to practice them. You don’t have to be anything special. Meditation practice is a way of remembering and reconnecting with the basic intelligence and goodness all human beings have.”

Dr. Brantley is the author and coauthor of a number of books on mindfulness including Calming Your Angry Mind and Daily Meditations for Calming Your Angry Mind with Wendy Millstine

Tension Release Exercises (TRE)

My guest today is Dr. David Berceli, PhD, creator of TRE® (Tension, Stress & Trauma Release Exercise) which is an innovative series of exercises that assist the body in releasing deep muscular patterns of stress, tension and trauma. TRE® safely activates a natural reflex mechanism of shaking or vibrating that releases muscular tension, calming down the nervous system. When this muscular shaking/vibrating mechanism is activated in a safe and controlled environment, the body is encouraged to return back to a state of balance.

Dr. Berceli has developed a marvelous Online TRE Webinar Course which offers a step by step explanation of  TRE® so you can get started right now with releasing trauma and reducing stress.

Dr. Berceli explains the potential therapeutic value of tremors in this Youtube video and is the author of Shake it Off Naturally.

This Youtube video is a testimonial of a man diagnosed with Essential Tremors who found TRE helpful.

How to Relieve Stress During the Holidays

On today’s radio show I discuss the relationship between stress and the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Once we have stress under control, the symptoms of Parkinson’s dissolve like a snowball in the hot sunshine.

As part of my discussion, I explain the purpose of the Parkinsons Recovery Mindfulness Program which entails a post each week here on the member website of a new mindfulness challenge. You receive these mindfulness challenges as a member which are posted each week on the Mindfulness website (see the link to the page on the right column).

Relieve Parkinson’s Symptoms with Hypnotherapy

Stress and chronic illness are interconnected. Scientists have shown that when the body is chronically stressed it’s unable to properly regulate hormones and the immune system, which results in illness. Stress comes from many sources including physical threats, daily tasks, problems, fatigue, anxiety and illness. Stress has a significant impact on PD patients because it decreases the body’s ability to repair and regenerate as well as worsening PD symptoms, especially tremor.

Hypnotherapy has been shown to be highly effective at reducing stress. Hypnotherapist Steve Frison discusses hypnotherapy and how it’s used to reduce symptoms and improve the health and well-being of those with PD. Find more information on Steve Frison’s website http://www.mindsighthypno.com

Ways to Relieve Stress that Do Not Cost a Cent

Stress has a profound impact on the symptoms of Parkinson’s. When under stress symptoms flare up. What can you do for yourself when in the thick of a stressful situation? Keith Zang from the Moonglow Enlightenment Center offers a fascinating overview of techniques you can put to use when you are stressed out. The best part of my interview with Keith is the techniques he talks about in the interview are free. They do not require the assistance of someone else. You also don’t need to spend a cent. Put one or several of his techniques to use when you are under stress. The only side effect you can expect is improved health on some level.
